tonight on "nightline." captured. the hunt is over. the dramatic conclusion to the most wanted men in america. two brothers accused of the biggest u.s. terror attack since 9/11. we are love from boston. baby-faced bombers. they came to america for a better life. the tale of two boys next door turned alleged terrorists. inches from killers. just before the blast, the suspected bombers stood right behind the 8-year-old child. tonight, his friends and classmates speak out. >> a special edition of

from boston, this is a special edition of "nightline." caught, with juju chang. >> good evening from boston. where the massive manhunt for the two most wanted men in america has come to a dramatic end. there was a collective sigh of relief and cheering in the streets. tonight, one alleged bomber captured, the other dead. all day until just a few hours ago, this city was in an unprecedented lockdown with nearly 1 million people warned to remain inside their homes. my colleague linsey davis watched the whole search unfold from the streets of watertown. >> reporter: boston was unsiege today as authorities found and killed tamerlan assure 9087 and cup toured his 19-year-old brother as he hid in a boat in a

watertown neighborhood. the frantic search for the suspected boston marathon bombers began thursday when the fbi released these grainy images. our first glimpse of the most wanted men in america. the fbi needed the public's help tracking down their lead suspects in the attack but they warned then that these men were armed and very dangerous. >> no one should attempt to apprehend them except law enforcement. do not take any action on your own. >> reporter: it was no exaggeration. late last night, authorities discovered mit police officer sean collier shot and killed by the suspects. at first, authorities didn't realize there was a connection to the bombing. but then authorities say the two men carjacked a mercedes suv in cambridge, briefly kidnapped the driver, and led police on a wild, violent chase through the streets of neighboring watertown. then a dramatic shoot-out. in all, 200 rounds were fired

between the police and the suspect, who also reportedly threw explosives from their car. >> in the exchange of the gunfire, we believe one of the suspects was struck and ultimately taken into custody. >> reporter: tamerlan tsarnaev was critically injured during the firefight and taken to a nearby hospital, where he eventually died. >> we spent 10, 15 minutes trying to resuscitate this patient. >> reporter: but his alleged accomplice was still on the loose. an army of police descended on the neighborhood. >> we're at the corner of mt. auburn and kimble, less than half a mile away from where the shoot-out took place. police officers are saying they're going to continue to go door to door. by now, a more complete picture of just how violent and heavily armed the brothers were begins to emerge. in watertown at their home, evidence of bombs, pipe bombs and a pressure cooker. possibly similar to the one used in the bombing. >> we believe this to be a terrorist, we believe this to be a man who's come here to kill

people. we need to get him in custody. >> reporter: by early morning, subways and buses were suspended. soon after, schools and universities closed down. police alerted residents to stay indoors and, quote, shelter in place. >> this is a very serious situation we're dealing with. >> reporter: s.w.a.t. team descended on a home in cambridge searching for the suspect. soon after, massachusetts governor duvall patrick ordered all of boston and the surrounding areas to go on lockdown. >> we're asking people to stay indoors with their doors locked and not to open the door for anyone other than a properly identified law enforcement officer. >> our number one priority right now is with these neighborhoods here in watertown and making them safe and finding this individual. >> reporter: acquaintances in the boston community immediately recognized tsarnaev and voiced utter shock. they say he was a well-liked, hardworking honor student who lived in the u.s. for many years. >> absolutely shocking and horrifying for all of us. it seems like a nightmare. it's hard to believe that

someone that, you know, was so friendly and funny just a couple of years ago could have done these types of things. >> reporter: by mid-morning the father of the two suspects who lives in russia spoke over the telephone. he denied his sons' involvement and said they were framed. he made a plea for his sons to surrender peacefully, adding if he is killed all hell will break loose. >> he could not say enough how innocent, how kind his sons both are. >> reporter: father continued to speak throughout the day. >> he said, surrender, i want you to come home alive, you have a bright future ahead of you. >> reporter: at midday, the lockdown still in full force. residents on edge peeked out windows, prisoners in their own homes. >> our doors are locked. our windows and shades are drawn. >> you know, really desolate. >> keep the doors locked, not open the door unless there's a uniformed, identified law enforcement officer on the other side. >> reporter: people now being told they may have to stay in their homes through the weekend.

by afternoon, the fbi removed a computer hard drive from the home of his sister. and after a full-day chase, authorities lifted the lockdown. >> none of those leads have been fruitful -- >> reporter: but then a break in the case. gunfire by the water's edge. we're talking about dozens of rounds fired. a lot of residents out on the street crowding the street right now. they started cheering. and as armed vehicles started parading, rushing back into the perimeter here, people were yelling "go get him." >> reporter: one eyewitness said his neighbor went to check on his boat today. he saw blood, climbed up a ladder to open the cover over the boat -- >> he looked at the boat and there was some things moved around. some rollers or things moved around. he said, that's very strange. so he went in his garage and he looked at what he thought was a body. >> within the hour, officers sweeped the area and finally, news the suspect is taken into custody. reportedly found alive. >> he's in custody, he's alive and we're going to prosecute him

and bring him to justice. >> reporter: mayor tom menino tweeting simply, we got him. in the surrounding neighborhoods, cheers of usa! usa! broke out as law enforcement simply took a sigh of relief. >> we are eternally grateful for the outcome here tonight. we have a suspect in custody. we're exhausted, folks. but we have a victory here tonight. but let's not forget those people along the way. >> reporter: as the night drew to a close, the president addressed a grateful nation. >> all in all, this has been a tough week. but we've seen the character of our country once more. >> reporter: tonight, dzhokhar tsarnaev is in serious condition at beth israel medical center, being treated for his injuries. and the city can finally sleep. for "nightline," i'm linsey davis in watertown, massachusetts. >> our thanks to linsey davis. coming up next for us, faces

rain. >> thank you very much. >> what can you tell us about these two men? >> juju, tonight a portrait of the suspected bombers is emerging. two brothers who came to the u.s. in 2003. like millions of immigrants, they came here in search of a better life. but something went terribly wrong. >> my sons would never, ever imagine that somehow the children of my brother would be associated with that. >> reporter: tonight some family members of the two brothers accused of the worst attack in the u.s. since 9/11 are asking the question no one seems to be able to answer tonight. why. their uncle in maryland says he thinks he knows. >> what do you think provoked this? >> being losers. hatred to those who were able to settle themselves. these are the only reasons i can imagine of. >> reporter: but what might have driven 26-year-old tamerlan tsarnaev and his 19-year-old brother dzhokhar to allegedly plant a pair of homemade bombs

at the boston marathon, killing three and wounding more than 150? those who knew them say they're shocked. >> it's just so shocking. like one day, i don't know, one day you can just, like, he's acting like nothing happened. and like if he really did this, which it seems like he did, it's just crazy how he can be so cool and calm tempered like that. >> something must have happened in the past few weeks, i guess, that triggered something like this? i don't know. he like -- as of last monday, i would never assume he would do something close to this. >> he was actually a very nice kid. i got along with him very well. he said hi every day. >> the tsarnaevs lived in a part of russia. conflict broke out aimed at radicalized muslims. the father worked in law enforcement. chechens were persecuted, he said. that's why we left. there was a manhunt for us at one point. they were about to annihilate us.

they fled and by 2003 the family was living in the boston area. the younger brother seemed to fit in. dzhokhar made friends, took drama that classes. >> i had one class with him. he had acting class together, and he was always funny and, you know, he contributed. it never seemed like there were ever any warning signs. >> reporter: playing several team sports, dzhokhar became an all-star on his high school wrestling team. >> every day he was, he was completely americanized. >> reporter: former teacher larry aaronson talked with him about coming to live in america. >> he was so grateful to be here and there was this whole idea of like, you know, this is the new life and i'm happy to be a part of this. he spoke like any other high school kid. >> reporter: after high school, older brother tamerlan attended bunker hill community college, but his real passion was boxing. in 2010, he battled his way to the new england heavyweight golden gloves championship but he apparently had an angry side. reportedly arrested for assaulting his girlfriend. the charge was dismissed.

he was quoted as saying, i don't have a single american friend. i don't understand them. but younger brother dzhokhar seemed different. the city of cambridge honored him with a merit award to attend the university of massachusetts at dartmouth. the boys' parents returned to russia, reached today by phone their mother says their sons were set up and they're innocent. >> in our house, nobody talked about terrorism. >> reporter: and today in russia, their father said he believed in his sons. i have 100% confidence in them, he said. >> they are normal young men, athletic. very athletic. smart boys. seemingly did not find himself yet in america. because it's not easy. >> reporter: tonight, a darker, digital profile is emerging from dzhokhar. these tweets over the past week. never underestimate the rebel with a cause. death is the destroyer of all pleasures. a decade in america already. i want out.

on the day of the boston marathon, he tweeted. ain't no love in the heart of the city. stay safe, people. as for tamerlan, he's believed to have spent the first six months of last year in russia. investigators are trying to find out what he was doing there. today, trying to find answers to this puzzle, fbi investigators removed a computer from the jersey home of the suspect's sister. but their aunt shows their online lives only show the brothers doing what most americans do, out of curiosity, not malice. as for the surviving brother, he will soon face his day in court. and juju, that is the day the people of boston are really looking forward to. >> you captured the anguish of all the families. thanks so much. coming up next in the company of evil, we talk to friends and family who knew these men, the most wanted men in america, when we come back. ye

19-year-old dzhokhjo dzhokhar tsarnaev standing behind martin richards. but what were they doing before this tragedy? and authorities began an all around the clock search? today i met with a friend of his who actually saw him and talked with him after the bombing. andrew glassy woke up this morning at his dorm in u-mass dartmouth to the screech of a fire alarm. >> me and my roomy woke up at the same time, what's going on, what's going on? >> reporter: as plaque blackhaw helicopters flew overhead, police went through the building telling students to leave now, it's not safe. >> i didn't have time to grab my wallet and phone, i only had time to grab my sweat pants and sneakers. >> reporter: turns out dzhokhar tsarnaev was living just one floor above him. >> you sat next to him in psychology. >> yeah, i sat next to him. >> reporter: was he studious? was he not paying attention?

>> he was pretty studious. >> reporter: even more chilling, andrew says he had a conversation of the target of the massive manhunt one full day after the bombing. >> i was like wow, he had the gal to come back and be able to act okay, like nothing happened. >> reporter: that's how he acted? not rushed, not nervous? >> nothing, like it was another day. >> reporter: dzhokhar, the alleged bomber, went back to campus life just a day after allegedly committing a terrorist attack. card swipes show that he went to the gym and slept in his dorm two full days after the bombing, not behaving like a fugitive from the law, but trying to blend right back into his normal life. how convincing was he on tuesday to you that nothing was amiss? >> he was so convincing. i thought as if it was regular old dzhokhar. we had a typical conversation. he was not startled. he was not scared.

he was not anything. he was just the same old dzhokhar. >> reporter: that sentiment was echoed by others who knew him. chris barry wrestled against him and they were friends at dartmouth. >> he was one of the nicest kids. every single time i saw him, he would make sure to say hi. he was very calm, relaxed all the time. junior. >> reporter: for people who knew him, there were no warning signs. andrew describes an average sophomore who enjoyed intramural soccer, played video games, and smoked a lot of marijuana. how often do you think he was doing it? >> probably every day. >> reporter: but you said this year you didn't see him smoking pot as much? >> no. i think -- he told me from one of our conversations. he was like oh, i don't smoke anymore. >> reporter: to friends on campus, he was a social yet low key guy with a messy dorm room who liked hip-hop music. friends never heard him talk about radical politicians or religion. but authorities believe the
